When looking at the front cover and contents page from a denotations/connotations point of view we can see that most of of the magazine falls under denotation

meaning that most of the content is the literal meaning, this may not have been a good choice as the target audience would be teenagers and a connotation style of language would provoke emotive (or otherwise) interpritaions of the langauge used, allthough that said the magazine dose apeal to the target audience in the sense that there are pictures of real students (which they may even know) on the front cover. I think my magazine is aporpiate in the sense that the colour scheme is apealing and also because it conforms to the college's logo's colour scheme. I used may be considered a bit too conservative for an audience of which it is targeted at however in doing this it does make the text very readable and non-patronizing. Images used are not of a high standard as they are all in questionable lighting (although in focus) and are all of similar shot distances and of similar angles. Using computer monitors as props is a good choice in the sense that any image can be loaded onto them and can be relevent to all most any topic likely to come up among teenagers. The magazine could have been greatly improved with the use of some visula graphics (Like on the final version of the music magazine) however my skills in photoshop at this stage where limited and I was not sure on how to do this, and as a result of this it has made the college magazine look bland and 'Blocky'. Feed back from the target audience noted allot of these issues and was useful in making the final project. my skills in photoshop have improved far better than I had hopped for (See first draft of Music magazine) and in addition to this I have also gained some skills in photogaphy and have managed to improve the quality of my image (partly due to the quality of my camera). I can now crop and edit pictures to a much more profesional standard as a result of this my pictures are now more eye pleasing and stand out much more. I have also learned how to download and apply new brushes for the use of my magazine which give it a more profesional look and would apeal more to the target audience.

New and old

After making both my final peice and my preliminary task i have learnt a number of new skills in both photo shop and photography. If we look at the preliminary task we can see an clear fault with it which is that it looks more like a page within a magazine rather than a front cover, this happened as a result of filling too much of the space with uneeded text and images this also made it look blocky. Another big falut is that all of the images are of similar camera distances, of similar angles, not very good lighting and none of them are edited this makes them look very amature. also my preliminary task uses no special brush toold to give intresting effects, this makes it look bland and unlikely to catch anyone's attention. I was given allot of feed back about my perliminary task I was told that "It does work but just not very well. It looks more like a contents page than a front cover, and the photos used are all very similar, in fact the magazine is very 'samey' through out" I took this into account when making my music magazine as well as small comments (Title too small, bland, pictures need editing). It is clear that i have learnt allot in the progresion from the two tasks when you look at the two pictures and the double page spreed (See flickr for the image) shows that i have also improved my journalism skills aswell.

The question of which publisher/s might be likely to publish your magazine? is a hard topic to think about (when considering my magazine is almost certainly going to ever be published) I suppose my magazine would most probably be published by Bauer as my magazine shows quite allot of similarities with Q magazine (which is also published by Bauer) and also because my magazine would likely only be published in a few areas around the world (Bauer only operates in 15 countries) due to the genre of my magazine being popular in only certain areas of the world (Europe and North America mainly). My magazine would likely be published along side magazines such as Q or kerrang and be distributed in places with larger selections of music magazines (WH smith or well known super markets like ASDA) I think depending on my magazines success (Hypothetically of course) it would likely branch out into other forms of media such as a website at very least but perhaps also a radio station soley for British music or perhaps even a TV channel. This would proably be required as with the worlds current economicly situation it is getting harder for magazines to stay a float but radio and TV are as popular as ever, but perhaps there is also room to tie in with things such as iTunes or Spotify (You can't listen to Oasis or The Beatles on Spotify maybe with a British music magazine backing them they could?)

Looking at these two images we can see a clear number of simularites such as the lose posture and the surly facial expresion, but also the less obvious ones such as the camera angle and the casual clothing. But if we refer

back to demographics we can also see a clear similarity such as the age (mid 40's), race and gender (White british male), although the area and social status are not the same (i.e. person on the left is from the east and is married with two teenage sons, whilst the right is from Manchester with a rocky relationship history). Aswell as this the two do not share similar Psychographics (i.e. Left is working class male with strong views against the use of drugs and public fighting i.e. a mainstreamer, where as the right clearly is not and is a succeeder). How my magazine represents social groups is fairly clear by the points made but they do try to 'subvert' conventional stereotypes of rock/pop stars in Britian such as public behavior and use of certain drugs as a posative as it is part of the target audiences image.
